Bible Verses for When You Can't Sleep
It's late, the house is quiet, and your mind won't stop — replaying the day, rehearsing tomorrow, spinning worst cases. If you're reading this at 3 a.m., you're not alone, and God is awake with you. Here are verses to steady your thoughts, a prayer for a restless mind, and one small thing to do before you try again to sleep.
Key Bible Verses for When You Can't Sleep
"It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep."
Rest is a gift God gives, not a prize you earn by staying anxious.
"He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep."
You can finally close your eyes because the One watching over you never does.
"When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet."
A promise for the very moment you lie down — sweet sleep, not dread.
"Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day."
Night fears lose their grip under the shelter of God.
A Prayer for When You Can't Sleep
Use this prayer as-is, or let it guide your own words. There is no perfect formula — God cares about honesty, not performance.
Father, it is late, and I am still awake. The house is quiet, but my mind is not. I keep replaying what happened today and worrying about what may happen tomorrow. I am tired, but I cannot seem to rest. You see every thought I cannot turn off. You know the fears I keep carrying, the questions I cannot answer, and the things I cannot fix at this hour. Thank you that you are awake with me. Thank you that while I am lying here, you are still watching over the people I love and the things I cannot control. I do not have to hold everything together tonight. Quiet my mind, Lord. Loosen the grip of fear. Help me place this day in your hands, and leave tomorrow there too. Slow my breathing. Soften my body. Let your peace settle over this room. And when sleep comes, let me receive it as a gift from you. Amen.
A 5-Minute Devotional for a Sleepless Night
"In peace I will both lie down and sleep, for you, LORD, alone make me live in safety."
There is a particular loneliness to being awake when the rest of the world is asleep — the dark feels bigger, worries feel louder, and morning feels impossibly far away. Notice what the psalmist does here. He does not say he will lie down once every problem is solved and every fear is settled. He lies down and sleeps because of who is keeping watch: "you, LORD, alone make me live in safety." Sleep is an act of trust. To close your eyes is to admit that you are not the one holding the world together tonight — and to let the God who never sleeps take the night shift. You do not have to resolve tomorrow before you rest. You only have to hand it, and yourself, to the One who is already awake and already watching over everyone you love.
What are you still trying to keep watch over tonight that you could hand to the God who never sleeps?
Reflect or Discuss
- 1
What worry is keeping you awake that you haven't yet handed to God tonight?
- 2
What would it feel like to trust that God is awake and watching over everything you love, so that you don't have to?
- 3
Is there one thing within your control you could write down to deal with tomorrow — and one thing outside your control you could release to God right now?
For Small Groups & Families
Families can make these verses part of a bedtime rhythm — read one aloud together, then let each person name one worry to hand to God before the lights go out. For a child afraid of the dark, or a whole household going through a restless, stressful season, a simple repeated prayer like Psalm 4:8 can become a familiar anchor that turns the end of the day into an act of trust rather than a nightly battle with fear.
One Small Step
Instead of reaching for your phone, breathe slowly and pray Psalm 121 back to God — "He that keepeth me will not slumber" — naming each worry as you exhale it. If your mind keeps racing, keep a notepad by the bed and write tomorrow's worries down to hand to God until morning.
These verses speak to sleeplessness in general. For a verse or prayer written around what is keeping you awake tonight — the specific worry, the exact thing your mind keeps circling — tell Faith Companion what is on your mind and receive something written for this moment.
